Depression

THERAPIES

Many people equate depression with sadness.

Which is a familiar and normal emotion experienced in everyday life, for example if we lose something precious or hurt someone unintentionally.

Depression is much more than this. It used to be thought that depression was only the result of some sort of chemical imbalance in the brain, but we know this is not always the case. People can have what is now known as “situational depression”. This means that a person can feel totally overwhelmed by their present life situation and can see no way forward and feel depressed.

Depression is a feeling of complete disconnection with people, including loved ones, a numbness and often an inability to communicate with those around you what is wrong.

Depression can mean that the things that you used to enjoy, the social interaction with others, physical activities, hobbies and pastimes all hold no meaning.

Your brain can feel like sludge and it is so hard to connect one thought to another. Something as simple as taking a shower can become exhausting. Friendships begin to dwindle through neglect and you can feel as if you have even disconnected from yourself. This can lead to thoughts of the only way out of your depressive state is to kill yourself’.

But even amid this apparently hopeless and dire situation, there is a great deal of hope.

With situational depression, life circumstances have forced you to slow down, almost to a full stop and in this “resting” state is a marvellous opportunity for self-discovery and growth.

YES. With professional guidance from our therapists at PMCO Bendigo we can help you explore what propelled you into your state of depression and why, and how you can use this time to set new goals and develop strategies to finally live life to the lull.
